Marian Smith
NORWICH – Following extended illnesses, Marian Elizabeth (Carpenter) Smith, 80, of Norwich, passed away peacefully at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.
She was born July 13, 1928, in Unadilla. She was the daughter of Henry and Irene (Harrington) Carpenter, formerly of Holmesville. On Nov. 30, 1946, she married Ivan H. Smith. She was predeceased by her husband, Ivan H. Smith, of Oxford, who passed away on July 7, 1980. She was also predeceased by her parents and brothers, Henry Carpenter, Jr., and Donald Carpenter.
She was a loving and caring mother/grandmother who is survived by two daughters, Linda Smith-Phillips, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Shari Smith-Ryan, Norwich; her granddaughters, Kristi Phillips, Cincinnati, Ohio; Stefanie Ryan, Sierra Ryan, Samantha Ryan, and Amber Ryan, all of Norwich, as well as her son-in-law, Timothy Ryan, also of Norwich, and great-grandson, Matthew Phillips, Cincinnati, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom she held dear.
Marian was an animal lover and leaves behind her two cats and her parakeet. Her passion was NASCAR. She never missed a race and could be found in front of the television every Sunday faithfully watching the race, while rooting for her favorite driver, Mark Martin. She was a lifelong resident of Chenango County, mostly the Oxford/Norwich areas, and had worked in a number of local factories and businesses (Crescent Corset Corporation, Norwich Knitting Mill, Norwich Shoe Company, Norwich Togs and Tees, Mid-York Press) and was employed by the Community Work Shop in Norwich when she began having health problems and was forced to retire in 1998. When healthy, Marian was an active member of the United Church of Oxford. Most recently, she was a resident of the A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Church of Oxford, 25 Main St., Oxford, with the Rev. Allen C. Lang, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.
Friends may call at the United Church of Oxford on Friday from10 a.m. until the time of the service.
