Harvey Heburn


NORWICH - Harvey J. Heburn, 88, of Norwich, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 26, 2009. He was born on January 7, 1921 in Rome, NY.
Harvey was a decorated veteran who served his country in World War II, stationed in the South Pacific with the United States Army. At the request of the Honorable John Warner, United States Senator, a flag was flown over the U.S. capitol on January 7, 2001, in honor of Harvey’s 80th birthday. He had a love of horses, was degreed in equestrianship, and owned Tennessee Walkers. He was a horse trainer and instructor. As a member of the Tennessee Walker Riding Horse Club, he rode his special horses, Raven and Sierra, in horse shows, and continued to ride into his early eighties.
Upon his retirement from Oneonta Sales, Harvey also enjoyed golfing and had coached little league baseball. He had a love of sports and enjoyed spending time with his family and grandkids. He was also an active member of the VFW, and a past commander of VFW Post #1206 of Oneonta, having held the commander’s office from 1967 - 1969.
Harvey is survived by his loving wife, Beverly, of Norwich; by his sister, Theresa Cronizer of Rome, and children: Harvey J. Heburn, Jr. and wife Mary of Tennessee, Charles Heburn of Florida, Cindy Herman and husband John of Oswego, Melissa Steckman and husband Eric of Virginia, Dorothy Davidson and husband Mark of Laurens. Also surviving are step-children: Robert W. Verry, Jr. and fiancee Katie of Norwich, Jeffrey J. Verry and fiancee Jessica of Sherburne, and Valerie Doliver and husband Brian of Norwich. Harvey enjoyed all of his 29 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren he leaves behind, and his special friends: Mike, Jackie, and Julie Gray and Christina Verry.
A memorial service for the family will be held on Sunday. Pastor Brian Conover of the Calvary Baptist church will attend to support the family in prayer.
Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
