NORWICH – Albert W. Gordon Sr., 86, of Norwich, formerly of Oxford, passed away on June 3, 2009 at his home.
He was born on Nov. 5, 1922 in Lebanon, the son of the late William and Amy (Rice) Gordon. On Aug. 26, 1978 he married Louann Manwarren, who died on February 7, 2003.
He is survived by his sons and daughters in law, Albert and Susan Gordon, Jr. of North Bangor, Glen and Bonnie Gordon of Pasco, Wash.; his brother, Joseph Dibble of Erieville; several grandchildren and great grandchildren and many other family and friends. He was predeceased by his daughter and son in law, Gail and Charles Abare, brothers, Richard Dibble and George Tullar and his sister, Elenora Heagal.
Al was a US Army veteran of World War II and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He was a life member, past commander, past chaplain and past sergeant at arms of Fort Hill Post #376, American Legion, Oxford. He had operated his own plumbing and heating business for 10 years. He then was a foreman at Tru-Stitch Shoe Co. in Malone for 18 years and then a supervisor for Norwich Shoe Co. for 15 years, retiring in 1984. He was a fireman in Bangor, NY for 21 years. He was a past Chenango County commander of the American Legion and District Aide. He also served on the board of the Oxford Youth Sports Program.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Behe Funeral Home 21 Main St., Oxford, NY with Rev. Allen Lang, pastor of the United Church of Oxford officiating. Burial, with full military honors by members of Fort Hill Post will be in J.D. Lewis Cemetery, Preston.
Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, Oxford on Friday from 6-8 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chenango County, 21 Hayes St., Norwich, NY.
