EDMESTON – On July 19, 1914, a daughter was born to Jesse and Nora Card in Edmeston, and they named her Emma Delaphine Card. On July 1, 2009, Emma’s soul passed from this life into the hands of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, two week short of her 95th birthday.
Emma’s entire life was spent in this area. She met the love of her life, George A. Meyers and they were married in New Berlin on Sept. 16, 1933 at the First Presbyterian Church, by Pastor G. Read. George predeceased Emma on Oct. 5, 1964.
After marrying, Emma and George lived in the area and decided to build their own home on Great Brook Road, where Emma continued to live until 2002. Due to failing health she was fortunate to take up residence at the Gilmour Nursing Facility in Norwich. While there for seven years, Emma experienced the love and excellent care of an exceptionally devoted staff.
Emma retired from Kraft Foods, Edmeston plant and not wanting to be idle, became the cook at the Sheriff’s Department in Norwich, serving meals for the staff and inmates for several years. Emma later worked at the ARC Sheltered Workshop in Norwich. One day she decided that she did not like traveling the winter roads to Norwich and thought “why not be at home and care for the clients there”... so after leaving the employment of the Workshop she gave home care to several clients until her age of 80 years. Proving that keeping busy keeps you young at heart.
Emma was proud of the fact that when she was 60 years young, she earned her High School Equivalency Diploma issued by the State of New York. She also received her certificate for a Bible Study Correspondence course, and in September of 1968 was baptized and became a member of the First Baptist Church of South New Berlin.
Having been predeceased by a brother and her sisters, Emma is survived by her three sons and their wives: Frank and Connie of Chenango Forks, David and Beverly of Smyrna, Kenneth and Mary Lee of South New Berlin, plus several grand and great grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Leon Card of Oxford.
At Emma’s request, there will be no calling hours. There will be graveside service for the family on Monday, July 6 in New Berlin, officiated by Pastor Barry Davis, pastor of the First Baptist Church of South New Berlin,.
Those wishing to remember Emma in a giving manner, may do so by donating to the Norwich SPCA (representing Emma’s love of animals) or the New Berlin Fire Department in appreciation for the help they provided her while she lived in that area.
Arrangements are by the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.
