MARY CAPRIO
NORWICH – Mary J. Caprio, 93, of Norwich, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 08, 2014 at the Residential Health Care Facility of Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born in Norwich on February 24, 1921, Mary was the daughter of James V. and Angelina (Paino) LoPiccolo. She graduated from Norwich High School with the Class of 1939, then began a career that took her from Assistant Manager at M. H. Fishman to the Payroll Clerk at the Norwich Shoe Company and, finally, to NBT Bank.
On February 27, 1943, in St. Bartholomew’s Church, Mary married Anthony A. Caprio, who died on June 21, 2010, after 67 years of marriage. Surviving Mary are her children; Leona and Frank Shield, of Cincinnati, OH, Nicholas and Judith Caprio, of East Aurora, NY, and Marianne and Dc Dave Kirsch of Norwich. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Michael (Stephanie) Shield, Brian Shield, Dr. Anthony (Nicole) Caprio, Dr. Thomas Caprio, Nicole (Jeremy) Conant and Emily Kirsch; a great-grandson, Jacob Conant and a sister, Josephine Mirabito, of Norwich. Mary was predeceased by her brother, Dominic LoPiccolo.
Mary and her husband, Tony, spent many happy winters in Florida. She will be remembered as a superb cook and for the wonderful knitting and crochet creations that she made for her family. She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Church and of the Ave Maria Guild, and was a former Girl Scout and Brownie Leader.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mary will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at St. Bartholomew’s Church with Rev. Ralph Bove, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place at St. Paul’s Cemetery in the spring. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Friday from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Members of the Ave Maria Guild will recite the rosary on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
