NORWICH – Florence S. Marchant passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, 2009 at the Gilmour Health Care Facility.
Born April 13, 1917 in Queens, Florence was the daughter of Albert and Florence Schierloh.
During the 1930s, Florence was the personal secretary to poet, Edna St. Vincent Millay, working at Millay’s home known as “Steepletop” in Austerlitz.
Florence especially enjoyed Theorem painting and took great pride in her home and flower gardens. She volunteered for the Hospital Auxiliary, working many years at “The Pink Door”, and created beautiful “Christmas Teas” at the United Methodist Church. Florence and her husband loved to go sailing on Lake Champlain and both were avid swimmers.
On July 3, 1942, in West Stockbridge, Mass., Florence married her loving husband, Richard Marchant, who survives. She is also survived by her four children, Nancy Stutts and husband, Joe, of Franklin, Virginia; Barbara Fick and husband, Paul, of Deansboro; Rick Marchant and wife, Anna, of Norwich; and Doug Marchant and wife, Elaine, of Norwich. Several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews also survive. She was predeceased by a brother, Albert Schierloh.
The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff of the Gilmour Health Care Facility for the wonderful care they gave to Florence.
It was Florence’s wish that there be no funeral service at this time.
