ROBERT J. KING
SHERBURNE – Robert J. “Bob” King, 91, of West Lake Village and Chenango Lake; formerly of the Unadilla/Sidney area passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at his home.
He was born November 8, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY, a son of Joseph and Catherine McCartney King. During his teen years, he attended the Bonnie Brae Boys School in NJ that helped shape his life. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps 2nd Marine Div. 1st Battalion, Asiatic Pacific Theater during WWII, where he was wounded twice and received the Purple Heart. He was also eligible for two Bronze Stars for the Mariana’s Operation on Saipan and the capture and occupation of Tinian. On March 26, 1950, Bob married Betty Joan Maguire in Cambria Heights, NY. Bob was a Federal Fire Chief at St. Albans Naval Hospital in Queens, NY, retiring after 26 years of service. Moving to upstate NY, he owned and operated the Country Motel in Unadilla, NY for several years.
Bob had a passion for live theater. He was an avid performer and an active member on and off the stage of the Abbey Theater of Performing Arts and the Tri-Town Theater. He was a member of the Sidney Rotary Club, the Masonic Lodge #801 F&AM, the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #277 and the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #2175, all of Sidney.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Joan; a daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Russell McIntyre of Sidney; a son, Wayne Robert King of Sidney; grandchildren, Taylor and Ashley Baker of Maryland, NY; Brendon King of Oneonta; Jordan King and Shane Tarr, both of Unadilla; a great-grandson, Maddex King; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Carol King, and a granddaughter, Hope Baker.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Sunday, March 8, 2015 from the Burgess and Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne.
Interment with military honors will be in the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery in Saratoga, NY at a later date.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday from 11am to 1pm prior to the service.
