PITTSFIELD – Dewey Pearson Blackwell, 82 of Pittsfield (Silver Lake) passed away Friday, Aug. 28, 2009 at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.
He was born in Hendersonville, N.C. on March 20, 1927 the son of Jasper and Betty (Greer) Blackwell. He married Norma Jean Allen on Oct. 4, 1952 in New Haven, Conn., a marriage of over 57 years. He served his country in the United States Navy for 20 years. During his career he was in the submarine service and also was a underwater demolition diver and diving instructor. Later in his career he was a recruiter for the U.S. Navy before his retirement. He was a member of the VFW of Morris and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Mystic, Conn. Dewey enjoyed his friends, his cattle and his solitude.
He is survived by his wife Norma of Silver Lake; his nieces, Dillie Staton of Etowah, N.C., Jacqueline Watkins and Anna Brown both of Hendersonville, N.C., as well as several great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Jay, Curtis and Brodith Blackwell and a sister, Ruby Huggins.
It is Dewey’s request that no services be held and that he be cremated.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Pittsfield Fire Dept. 167 State Hwy. 80, New Berlin, NY 13411 in his memory.
