ROWLAND W. HARVEY
OXFORD – Rowland W. (Rod) Harvey, 90 of Oxford passed on from this life on July 20, 2015 at the home of his daughter in Norwich. He was born on November 30, 1924 in Oxford a son of the late Harry and Beatrice (Eccleston) Harvey. On June 25, 1946 he married Mary A. Smith, who passed on February 17, 2014.
He is survived by his daughter and son in law, Georgia and Jack Henzler of Norwich; his son Michael Harvey and wife LaLonda of Oregon; his brother, William Harvey of Oxford; several grandchildren, including Heather (Rich) Chiavelli, Scott Henzler, and Heidi Henzler (Chris Jaycox); his great grandchildren, Ashley Harris, Derek (Courtney) Harris, Autumn Chiavelli, and Linden Henzler; and 2 great great grandchildren, Skylar and Aiden. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by his daughter, Peggy Harvey, his granddaughter, Randy Harvey, his brothers, Dale Harvey, Robert Harvey, and Durwood (Mickey) Harvey, and his sisters, Thelma Horton and Vivian VanDuser.
Rod had worked for A&P Supermarkets for 45 years, including managing the Oxford store at the time of its fire, assistant manager in Norwich and as a relief manager in the area. He always considered his family as his first priority. He was a long time member of the Oxford Fire Department and Oxford Emergency Squad. He was a Boy Scout leader in Oxford when it was a part of the Susquenango Council and had also served as Chenango County and District Commissioner. He was active with Toys for Tots in Norwich, where he also made many wooden doll cradles, high chairs and other toys. His giving nature was known by many. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Oxford Historical Society and enjoyed sharing his collection of Oxford pictures and cards with others. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the medical corps of the US Army. He was a member of Fort Hill Post #376, American Legion. He was the patriarch of 5 living generations of the Harvey family.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 27, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford with Rev. Lester Smith officiating. Burial will military honors will be in Riverview Cemetery, Oxford.
