SAN DIEGO, CA – Noriko Judy Carney went to be with her lord on December 2, 2015 after a brief battle against an infection. She was 87.
Noriko was born in Fukushima, Japan the eldest of five children to Shinichi and Umeko (Sakuyama) Enokida. She attended school in Tokyo.
During World War II her high school years were spent doing mandatory work in local aircraft and gun factories. After the war ended Noriko worked at various U.S. Army Camps around the Tokyo - Fukushima areas. It was during this time that she acquired her nickname "Judy". In December 1955 she met her future husband Herman Carney, a U.S. Navy sailor, in a restaurant in Yokosuka where she worked. The operating schedule of his ship, the USS Firedrake AE-14, left their relationship a "catch-as-catch-can" romance. September 1957 saw the chance for them to be together when Herman received assignment to the USS Luzon ARG-2 in Sasebo and their romance grew from there. Noriko and Herman were married at the American Consulate in Fukuoka, Japan on June 24, 1958. In 1972 Noriko became a U.S. citizen and chose "Judy" as her middle name. During the 26 years of following Herman's Navy career she moved 11 times at different locations. After Herman retired from the Navy they decided to make San Diego their home. Having lived in Brooklyn NY, Great Lakes IL and Philadelphia PA she said she was "tired of the snow and cold".
Noriko was preceded by her parents and daughter, Michiko Patricia (1960). She is survived by her loving husband, sons Patrick J. and Mark D., daughter-in-law Zhensan, granddaughters Lisa and Aimee of Imperial Beach, CA, and her siblings, Yukiko, Hiroshi, Akiko and Yasushi, all of Yokohama, Japan.
Noriko was a dedicated and loving wife and mother, proud of her sons and grandchildren.
Noriko was cremated and will be inurned at a later date in Maplewood Cemetery in Mt. Upton, NY alongside her daughter.
