SHERBURNE: Catherine Merrill Mastro, 85, of West Hill Rd., passed away Sunday, August 7, 2016 in Syracuse.
She was born June 25, 1931 in Sherburne, a daughter of Charles and Eleanor Cunningham Merrill. She graduated with honors from Sherburne High School and later, graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy. On August 29, 1953, Catherine married Donald R. Mastro at St. Malachy’s Church in Sherburne. He predeceased her on November 6, 2006. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Catherine’s life was devoted to caring for her family and friends. She enjoyed sewing and was a talented seamstress. She had also assisted with the reading program in the Middleboro, MA schools.
Catherine was a communicant and an active member of St. Malachy’s Church in Sherburne, where she was a member and past president of the Altar Rosary Society. She had also served on several church committees, and for many years, was the chairperson of the funeral dinner committee.
Surviving are her children, Richard M. and Charlene O’Connor Mastro, Raymond E. and Pamela Pinney Mastro, Barbara J. and Michael Colbert, Charles A. and Theresa Jeffrey Mastro, and Paul S. Mastro, all of Sherburne; her beloved grandchildren, Erin and Stephen Switzer of Zephyrhills, FL; Timothy and Sara Richards Mastro of Latham, NY; Seth Mastro and his companion, Jennifer Thorpe of VA; Matthew and Krystal Alger Mastro of Cicero; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Mastro; step-grandchildren, Bernadette O’Connor Camara of New Bedford, MA, and Brian O’Connor of Dallas, TX; and three step-great-grandchildren, Logan Camara, Brian O'Connor and Genevieve O'Connor. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am Friday, August 12, 2016 from St. Malachy’s Church, East State St., Sherburne, followed by interment in West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne on Thursday from 1-4pm. The rosary will be recited at 12:30 pm
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to St. Malachy’s Church, the American Heart Association, or the American Diabetes Association.
