GEORGETOWN – Thomas Arthur Sawyer, 70, of Jenne Rd., passed away Friday, December 2, 2016 at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.
He was born July 19, 1946 in Oneida, NY a son of the late Harry Woodrow Sawyer and Sylvia Maxine Weston, and received his education in Morrisville-Eaton schools. Tom was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam Conflict from 1967 to 1969, and then was a crew chief in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1969 to 1973. He was a self-employed contractor until his retirement. Tom was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, ice fishing and trap shooting. He also enjoyed training bloodhounds for search and rescue.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #236 in Earlville; the Pompey Rod & Gun Club; and the Amateur Trap Shooting Association. He was a former member of the Safari Club.
He will be laid to rest with his best friend and faithful companion Copper.
Surviving are his companion, Donna Williams Sawyer of Georgetown; daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy Sawyer-Simpson and Scott Simpson of Sherburne; Heather Sawyer Mierke and Brad Mierke of DeRuyter; five grandchildren, Caleb, Derek and Tomas Gager, Hannah and Sawyer Mierke; a great-granddaughter, Annabelle Gager; and a soon-to-be born great-grandson, Mason Gager; sisters and brothers, Karen Hamilton, Jim Hamilton, Randy Hamilton, Deb Maynard and Mike Sawyer; many nieces and nephews. A brother, David Sawyer predeceased him.
Graveside services with military honors in the Hillside Cemetery, Georgetown will be held at a date and time to be announced in the spring.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 3 Preston St., Earlville, NY on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9pm.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at 1pm Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the Georgetown Inn, Route 26, Georgetown, NY.
The family has requested no flowers. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Pompey Rod & Gun Club, 2035 Swift Rd., Pompey, NY 13138.
