REA VICTORIA CALVERT
Rea Victoria Calvert died December 12 in the Residential Health Care Facility of Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich, New York. She was born October 13, 1914 in Watertown, Wisconsin, the daughter of John and Ilona (Kostjal) Havlick. The family moved to Valparaiso, Indiana to help at the family resort on Burlington Beach. At the resort, she met her future husband, Gwalter Cowdin (Dude) Calvert, who was a musician in a big band playing there. They married July 3, 1937 and were together for 65 years until his death in 2002. They spent most of their life in Michigan City, Indiana, where for many years they owned Calvert Studio, a photography business. Rea was an active member of the Women of Trinity, a docent at the Old Lighthouse Museum, and an avid reader and golfer. In 2000, Gwalter and Rea relocated to New York to be near their daughters, Victoria Calvert (Martin) Kappel in Norwich and Susan (Roy) Hammecker in Lyons Falls. She was predeceased by her parents as well as her two brothers, John Havlick of Seattle, Washington and Dr. Paul Havlick of Valparaiso, Indiana. Survivors include four grandsons: Michael (Myra Haggerty) Harrold and their children, Naomi and Jackson of San Mateo, California; Julian Kappel of Binghamton, New York; Chris (Tina) Harrold and their children, Brianna and Nick of New Bremen, New York; and Christopher Kappel of Los Angeles, California. Step grandchildren and their families include Lori (Jim) Farquhar and their children, Julie and Collin of Lowville, New York; Cindy (Mike) McLean and their daughters, Zoe and Sophia of Colton, New York; Keith (Libby) Hammecker and their daughters, Cassidy and Caitlin of Cobleskill, New York; and Kim (Ed) Smith and their daughter, Megan of Lexington Park, Maryland. Nieces and nephews include Nancy Calvert of Naperville, Illinois, Jane Rogers (John Kovacs) of Medfield, Massachussetts, Dr. John Havlick of Valparaiso, Indiana, Patricia Krase, Penni Parlatore, Laurie Landing, Deborah Boehm, Marilyn Cook and Kay Willett. A service at Forest Presbyterian Church, Lyons Falls NY will be held in the spring. Rea will be buried in the summer in Michigan City, Indiana, following a service at Trinity Episcopal Church. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff of the Residential Health Care Facility of Chenango Memorial Hospital, particularly Deborah Carnachan, R.N., Dr. James Simcoe, and the entire staff of Two South for their superb care and loving devotion to Rea.
