Carl Carpenter


PITTSFIELD – Carl Douglas Carpenter, 66, of Pittsfield, died on Oct. 11, 2009 as a result of an auto accident on Rt. 13.
He was born on April 3, 1943 to Marilyn Miller and Leon Carpenter at the family farm in the Town of Pittsfield. He married Myrtle Curtis on June 20, 1964 at the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin.
He spent his childhood in Pittsfield and attended the New Berlin Central School. He retired from the Otsego County Highway Department as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator. He was affiliated with the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin. He was a charter member of the Pittsfield Fire Department and served as the 2nd Assistant Chief in this organization. He was also a member of the New Berlin Fish and Game Club and was a charter member of the Midstate Antique Stock Car Club, where he served as its president for 10 years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years and two sons, Michael Carpenter of Pittsfield and Russ and Pat Carpenter of Edmeston; one brother, Gary Carpenter of Oxford; and two nephews. He was predeceased by one son, Art.
Carl loved his family, his farm animals, stock car racing and the board meetings at the barber shop. During his retirement years, Carl and Myrtle drove their 1950 “Lone Wolf” Ford truck to area cruise-ins and with his gift of gab made friends everywhere. He raced for many years with the Midstate Antique Stock Car Club and was the fourth turn flagger at the Afton Speedway for 17 years.
Calling hours for Carl will take place at the Dakin Funeral Home in New Berlin from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The funeral service will be at the Dakin Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Thursday with Rev. Allyson Ellis of the First United Methodist Church in New Berlin officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery of New Berlin.
