McDONOUGH – Lucille E. Sherman, 91, of McDonough, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009 at Chenango Memorial Residential Health Care Facility.
She was born on Aug. 20, 1918 in McDonough a daughter of the late William and May (Deuel) Hayden. On July 7, 1942 in Calvary Episcopal Church she married Wilson Sherman, who passed away on Oct. 6, 2007.
She is survived by her children, Jerry and Carol Sherman of Lake Honeoye, Matthew Sherman of McDonough, and Martha and Harlie Stowell of Smyrna; her grandchildren, Gregory Sherman, Jennifer Sherman, Harlie Stowell Jr., Holly and Joseph Hoffman, Elizabeth Sherman, and Andrew Sherman; her great grandchildren, Madisyn Stowell, Mytchell Stowell, and Summer Wilson Sherman. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Lucille attended McDonough Union School and graduated from Oxford Academy and Central School in 1936. She received her Registered Nurse degree from C.S. Wilson Memorial Hospital in 1941. She was active for several years in the American Red Cross and during World War II she taught classed for Home Care of the Sick. She worked at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich and Quintard Hospital, San Diego, Calif. as an obstetrical nurse. She worked for Chenango County at the county home for over 20 years and later for the Physically Handicapped Children’s Program.
She was an active member of Calvary Episcopal Church, McDonough serving as Senior Warden for several years and held several offices in the Episcopal Church Women’s Group. She had also served as president of the Chenango County Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary. She was a charter member of the McDonough American Legion Auxiliary and the McDonough Improvement Committee. She was active in Democratic Party affairs and was a member of the AARP. She loved camping and baking. She was a member of the McDonough Senior Center and the McDonough Food Pantry Committee. She also volunteered at the Oxford Taste and See Kitchen.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Calvary Community Center, McDonough, with the Rev. Ralph Osborne, rector of St.Paul’s Episcopal Church, Oxford, officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, McDonough.
Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford, on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the McDonough Improvement Committee, c/o Eleanor Troicke, McDonough, NY 13801.
