SHERBURNE – Robert L. “Bob” McIntyre, 72, of Sherburne, passed away early Friday evening, Oct. 16, 2009, in the A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta.
Born in Norwich in October of 1937, the son of Donald and Ruth Crandall McIntyre, Bob was raised by his maternal grandparents, Floyd and Cora Crandall. Growing up in Sherburne, Bob played all sports and lettered in all of them during his school years, and maintained his interest in sports throughout his life. Following his high school graduation, he had a chance to play baseball in the minor leagues with the Boston Red Sox, but chose instead to go to work. For a short time he was assistant sports editor for The Evening Sun and also worked briefly for TACO in Sherburne, did some construction work near the New York/Pennsylvania border, and did some technical work on several TV dishes in the Lebanon area in Madison County. His real career was with Norwich Eaton and its successors, for whom he worked for 35 years, retiring as a pipe fitter and welder. A man who liked to crack a joke and give a rhyming nickname to everyone, Bob was an avid fan of the New York Giants and Boston Red Sox, and loved anything to do with Syracuse sports. On Dec. 8, 1973, in South Otselic, Bob married Fannie Brown.
Bob is survived by his wife, Fannie McIntyre of Sherburne; and his children and their spouses: Jim and Judy McIntyre of Norwich, Brian and Alexia McIntyre of Waldorf, Md., Vivian and Mike Morse of Norwich, and Laurie and David Harmon of Sherburne. Also surviving are his grandchildren Charles Wightman and Keri Brewer, both of Norwich, Matt Morse of New Berlin, Michelle Friedrich of Orlando, Fla., Aaron McEligot of Hamilton, Alex McIntyre of Waldorf, Md., Alicia McEligot of Norwich, Evan McIntyre of Waldorf, Md., Lukas Harmon of Sherburne and Crystal Morse of Norwich along with great-grandhildren Madison Murphy and Ella Foote, both of Norwich.
Funeral services for Bob will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. George Gallandorm, pastor of the Sherburne United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Willcox Cemetery, Smyrna. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.
