ERSKINE R. SMITH
Erskine R. Smith, 78, of Norwich and former lifelong resident of Beaver Meadow, passed away Saturday evening, May 13, 2017, at his home with his family by his side.
Erskine was born on January 6, 1939 in Beaver Meadow the son of Robert and Hyla (Brown) Smith. He grew up in the Beaver Meadow area and was a graduate of the South Otselic High School.
A dairy farmer for most of his life and losing his dad at the early age of thirteen, he worked with his mom and wife Norma to keep the farm going which he operated for over 50 years. Following his retirement from the farm he then worked at the Otselic Valley Central School for a short period of time before relocating to Norwich where he made many good friends. In his leisure time Erskine enjoyed gardening, having breakfast with his friends and spending time with his pets Peanut and Muffy.
Erskine is survived by his wife of 56 years Norma (Moon) Smith of Norwich, his daughter JoAnn Cerasani and husband George of Beaver Meadow and his grandchildren David Cerasani and wife Kim of Camillus, NY, George Cerasani and wife Daniella of Temecula, CA and his great granddaughter Kayla Cerasani. Also surviving is his mother-in-law Doris Moon, his brothers–in -laws & sisters–in-laws Connie and JR Craig, Pat Toomey, Jane and Nate Huntley and Ernie Moon. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Erskine was predeceased by a son Robert Smith in 2010 and his sisters Evelyn Roskelly and Christine Stevens.
A funeral service for Erskine will be held on Thursday at 10 AM from the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeremy Stopford will officiate. Interment will follow in the Sherburne West Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call at the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5-7 pm.
