NORWICH – Vergie M. McPeek, 97, of Norwich, passed away early Monday morning, Oct. 26, 2009, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born in Maplewood, Pa., in May of 1912, Vergie was the daughter of Jacob and Celesta Swingle Spangenberg. Vergie’s mother passed away at a young age and, just after graduating high school, Vergie took over the care of her family. On Sept. 19, 1936, in Lake Arial, Pa., Vergie married Robert McPeek. The McPeeks subsequently settled in the Norwich area and Vergie worked for a time in the cafeterias of the Guilford and Bainbridge schools. She also spent some time as an employee of the knitting mill. Following the birth of her children, Vergie became a stay-at-home mom, dedicating herself to her family. By nature, she was a very giving person who liked quilting and crocheting. She was a member of the Norwich Assembly of God.
Vergie is survived by her husband of 73 years, Robert McPeek of Norwich; by her sons, Harold McPeek of Maine and Francis McPeek of Georgia; by 10 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her only daughter, Leona VonWald; and by her brothers, Edgar, Glenwood, Archie and Virgil Spangenberg.
Funeral services for Vergie will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Assembly of God in Norwich. The Rev. Dennis McKenna, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be at the convenience of Vergie’s family in the Elmdale Cemetery in Lake Arial, Pa. Friends are invited to call at the Assembly of God on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service at 11.
Arrangements are with the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
