John Anthony Saber, 86, of Stone House Road, Sherburne, NY passed away Saturday November 25, 2017 at Albany Medical Center after a brief illness.
John was born February 7, 1931 in Norwich, NY, the son of Joseph and Emma Saber, née Saki. He graduated from Sherburne High School with the Class of 1949. John was a gifted and talented athlete being the team Captain of the baseball, football and basketball teams in his senior year. On February 27, 1954 he married Fay Helen Owens in Saint Malachy’s Catholic Church in Sherburne, New York.
John was the second-generation owner and proprietor of Saber’s Market on North Main Street in Sherburne. John had many hobbies and interests; harness racing at Vernon Downs, owning several trotters, casino visits, Syracuse University basketball and fishing. John first and foremost was the patriarch of three generations of the Saber family. He enjoyed his time spent with his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He regularly attended Saint Malachy’s Catholic Church in Sherburne.
John is survived by his two daughters, Majel Alishauskas (John) of Sherburne, Kendall Saber (Joseph Angelino) of Norwich, and a son, John A. “Jay” Saber, II (Amy Jackson) of Powhatan, VA. Several grandchildren; Brian Saber of Norwich, John “Jason” Alishauskas (Tiffany) of Gore, VA, Chad Alishauskas, Sherburne, Abby Russell (Justin) of Elmira, NY, Aaron Alishauskas, of Sherburne, Sara Endress (William) of Norwich, Jordan Alishauskas (Jessica) of Earlville, Ryan Alishauskas of Sherburne, Adam Alishauskas of Fort Drum, Laura Alishauskas of Sherburne, Ivy Jackson of Powhatan, VA and five great-grandchildren, Braedyn, Rachael, Kaylee, William and Owen. John was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Emma Saber, his sisters Marmish George and Gloria Morton and his wife Fay Saber.
There will be no calling hours. Friends and family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial at Saint Malachy’s Church on Saturday December 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.
Those who wish to make a donation in John’s name may do so by contributing to the Saber Memorial Trust Fund arranged to benefit the parishioners of Saint Malachy’s Church.
