Phyllis Whitten


DELHI – Phyllis Ann Whitten (Bennett) passed away on Nov. 5, 2009 at the O’Connor Hospital, Delhi, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on April 5, 1934 in West Burlington to Alva E. and Jenny (Burlison) Bennett. She graduated from Sherburne Central School. Prior to her marriage she was employed in the secretarial pool at the Eaton Laboratories in Norwich. On June 22, 1957 she married Gordon L. Whitten at the Methodist Church in Sherburne. From 1957 to 1965, she & her husband resided in Delmar and she was employed as secretary in the Carl Payne Insurance Agency. In 1965, they relocated to their current home in Delhi where she worked for Burton F. Clark, Inc. After her husbands retirement, they spent their winters at their Florida vacation home in West Palm Beach. She was of the Protestant faith and a past member of the Eastern Star.
Her interests & hobbies included collecting dolls, stuffed bears and quilts. She was very fond of flowers and plants which could usually be found adorning her home.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, Gordon; a son, Craig L. Whitten and wife, Diane; granddaughters Justine, Jennifer and Kristen Whitten of Sidney; a daughter, Lisa Michele Osborn and husband, Paul; grandson Sean Osborn of Germantown, Md. Also a sister-in-law, Elsie Bennett; two nephews, Douglas Bennett and Kenneth Bennett and a niece, Barbara Mayhood; a special cousin Jeannine Palmiter and several other cousins. She was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Donald Bennett.
She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother to her family and will be sorely missed by the family and her friends.
In keeping with the deceased wishes, there will be no calling hours. A private graveside service will be conducted at the convenience of the family.
The family wishes to express our profound gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of O’Connor Hospital for their compassion and excellent care of Phyllis and her family during her stay. We also would like to thank the Catskill Hospice and Palliative Care Organization for the coordination of her care during that time. The family also wants to thank Dr.’s Freeth, Jederlinic, Cook, Eckle, Gahan, Maasudi, Weisberger, Koran and Nguyen for the continuing care provided her during the past several years.
Arrangements are under the care of the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin. Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, National Diabetic Assoc., ARC of Delaware County or the O’Connor Hospital, Delhi.
