Augustine B. “Augie” Zieno, 84, of Norwich, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 15, 2018 at Valley View Nursing Home.
Born on October 1, 1933, in Norwich, Augie was the son of Thomas and Frances (Lauricella) Zieno. After graduating from Norwich High School, Augie completed some college work at Michigan State University and Binghamton University. He then served in the U.S. Army, and was a language instructor stationed in Germany, being fluent in both German and Italian.
Prior to his service to our country, Augie began working at The Norwich Pharmacal Company. Upon his return, Augie began a long career with Victory Markets and later Great American Food Stores. Augie worked in every store creating the newest store displays. He also was lead in painting the parking lot lines at the grocery stores. Augie took great pride in his garden, but even greater pride in his famous meatball recipe. He was a lifelong reader and was always looking to learn more on a variety of subjects. Augie was a member of the “Sunday Comics” Bowling League. He very much enjoyed spending time with his family at the family camp in Old Forge, NY. Augie was very proud of his grandchildren and looked forward to spending time with them.
After completing his service, Augie married Jean (Owen) Zieno at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Norwich on September 3, 1960, who survives. In addition to his wife, Augie is survived by son Mark Zieno and his wife, Deborah, of Norwich. daughter Kimberly Babcock and her husband, Christopher, of Plymouth, and son Stephen Zieno and his wife, Jennifer, of Preston; grandchildren Ryan Zieno and his wife, Paula, Nicole Zieno, Ty Babcock, and Kaitlyn and Laci Zieno; and great-grandson Nicolo Zieno. He is also survived by sister’s-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. Augie was predeceased by Rosalie Crumb, Rose Zieno, Dominic Zieno, Michael Zieno, and Emmanuel Zieno.
A prayer service for Augie will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018, at the Wilson Funeral Home. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place in the spring.
