Walter G. Peters
Walter G. Peters, 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford just hours prior to his 91st birthday.
Born February 7, 1927, in Saugerties, NY, Walter was the son of John and Anne (Rusell) Peters. He attended Saugerties High School, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, but the war ended soon after his enlistment. Then Walter served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged thereafter. Walter spent most of his working career in corrections. He was a storeroom clerk at the Woodbourne Correctional Facility in Woodbourne, NY, and at night worked in Victory Markets. He then went on to serve as a narcotics correction officer at Iroquois in Medina, NY. He completed his career in corrections as a Corrections Officer at the Attica Correctional Facility, in Attica, NY, and retired in 1982. In his free time, Walter enjoyed camping with his wife, Catherine, all along the east coast from New York to Mississippi, as well as in Vancouver, WA, and in Nebraska. He enjoyed bike riding, fishing, hunting, planting flowers, and loved little children and telling jokes. He was also an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in LeRoy, NY, and a member of the Memorial Park Baptist Church in Vestal, NY.
Walter is survived by his daughters Linda (Robert) Patterson, of Norwich, Bonnie Scheller, of Vancouver, WA, Lou Ann (Louis) Benware, of Lynchburg, VA, and Dawn (Rick) Tropp, of Forrest, VA. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, brother Richard, of Kingston, NY, and many nieces and nephews. Walter was predeceased by his beloved wife, Catherine, and his brothers, Robert and John, and waiting at the Pearly Gates one little Angel, a great-grandson.
A memorial service for Walter will be held in the spring at the Memorial Park Baptist Church, in Vestal, NY. Burial will be at a later date at Easthaven Cemetery in Brookhaven, MS.
