Joyce M. Powers


Joyce M. (McGowan) Powers, 86, of Greene, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at New York State Veterans’ Home in Oxford.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard C. Powers; son, James J. Powers; parents, Ida and Hugh McGowan; 3 sisters, Inath Hubbard, Sylvia Witchella, Reta Collier; brother, Earl McGowan.
Joyce is survived by her children, Timothy and Scotti Powers, Kathleen and Jeffrey Maisonet, Mary and James Davis, daughter-in-law, Jodi Powers; grandchildren, Sarah and Matt Caputo, Heather and Jeremy Moore, Kelly and Justin Figueroa, Hilary and Dominic Avallone, Stephanie and Michael Connolly, Holly and Brian Breck, William Powers and Casey Welchel, Clara Powers, Jacob Powers, Elizabeth and E.G. Gregory, Megan Maisonet and Anthony Skrobola, great grandchildren Abby and Peter Caputo, Avery Moore, Luke and James Connolly, Benson and Reece Breck; 3 sisters, Nora Craver, June Smith and Ann Howard and several nieces and nephews.

Joyce was born and raised in Oxford and she married the love of her life, Rich, on August 20, 1955, they had 4 children. Joyce was an active member of St Rita’s church in Chenango Forks, where she taught First Communion classes.

When she moved to Greene in1974, she also taught First Communion classes at the The Immaculate Conception and was instrumental in starting the funeral luncheons program that is still an integral part of the church today.

Joyce loved to sew.

She made quilts for each of her grandchildren when they were born. She loved the outdoors, cross country skiing and ice skating in the winter, and gardening in the summer.

She enjoyed traveling with Dad during their retirement years, and never missed a chance to play pitch, especially with her sisters. Joyce was quick with a smile and had some great one liners.

She was a devoted wife, and a loving mother and grandmother who will be in our hearts forever.

The family would like to thank the staff at the NYS Veterans’ Home for the care and concern they showed Mom through the years. A funeral mass will be held 11:00am Monday at Immaculate Conception Church, Greene.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Oxford. Friends of the family may call Sunday 2:00 to 5:00pm at Root Funeral Home 23 North Chenango Street, Greene, New York 13778 and condolences may be sent to the family at www.rootfh.com.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Church for religious education. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.rootfh.com.
