Elizabeth King


NORWICH – Elizabeth L. “Betty” King, life-long area resident, passed away Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 23, 2009, in the Residential Health Care Facility of Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born in Smyrna in March of 1919, Betty was the daughter of Bert and Cora Bellinger King. She grew up in Smyrna and, following her graduation from the Smyrna High School, Betty attended the Utica School of Commerce. In March of 1937, she went to work in the office at Gaines Dog Food in Sherburne, remaining there until July of 1944 when she took employment with Bennett Ireland in Norwich. Betty’s last job was with the Chenango Valley Travel Bureau, where she worked from 1968 until her retirement in 1993. She was a former and charter member of the National Secretaries Association and the Smyrna Grange, a long-time member of the Norwich YMCA and the Broad Street United Methodist Church, and enjoyed bowling for many years.
Betty is survived by her special niece and nephew-in-law, Norma and Robert Kemper and family of Fayetteville; nephew Roger Wilcox; several other nieces and nephews, and several grand and great grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters and brother: Nellie Wilcox Salisbury, Martha Wyant, and Laverne B. King.
Memorial services for Betty will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, where family and friends are invited. The Rev. Jeff Hale, pastor of the Broad Street United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Sherburne West Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Betty’s memory can be made to the Norwich YMCA, 70 North Broad St., Norwich, NY 13815.
