EAST PHARSALIA – Barry G. Hamilton, 52, of East Pharsalia, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 at his home.
The son of Harold G. and Mary Keator Hamilton, Barry was born in Norwich in May of 1957. He grew up in East Pharsalia, attending Norwich schools, graduating in 1975. Right out of high school, Barry went to work for Bennett Ireland, remaining there until its closure, then beginning his lengthy career as an assistant caretaker in Mt. Hope Cemetery. During winter lay-offs at the cemetery, he worked with Jim Rydzewski at the Chenango Valley Vault Company and his successor. Barry began his passion for motorcycles at a very young age, starting out with dirt bikes as soon as his feet could touch the ground. He was an avid hunter and a member of the NRA. He also enjoyed fishing, watching a good NASCAR race, and collecting NASCAR memorabilia. Seeming to be a big grizzly bear to most, Barry found great pleasure and serenity in sitting outdoors and enjoying a wood fire. To his grandchildren and great nephews, who, during his last years, were his life, he was just a big soft teddy bear.
Barry is survived by his wife Bonnie of East Pharsalia; his daughter Amanda Hamilton of East Pharsalia; and by his brother and sister: Jerry Hamilton and wife Dodie of Norwich and Joyce Bliss of Oxford. Also surviving are Barry’s three grandchildren; two nieces, Nicole and Kristi; one nephew, Rodney; and one great niece and five great nephews.
Sympathy cards, prayers and thoughts may be sent to Barry’s family at PO Box 21, East Pharsalia NY 13758.
A memorial service for Barry will be held at a later date, time and location to be announced. Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
