NORWICH – John Arnold Baldwin, 72, of Norwich, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital, following his courageous three-year battle with cancer.
The son of Arnold and Doris Wright Baldwin, John was born in Oneonta in January of 1938. He attended school in South New Berlin, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard. John was the former owner and operator of the gas station in South New Berlin, and had also worked for Valley Supply in South New Berlin and Chenango Ford Tractor in Norwich. An enthusiastic motorcyclist who loved his Gold Wing, he spent many happy hours together with wife Barbara, traveling on their Gold Wing motorcycle, attending rallies, going for day rides with friends, and vacationing in many parts of the country. While doing this, they were able to visit 44 of the 50 states. John also had a great passion for “cars” and country music. One of his biggest joys was the pleasure he had with his step-grand and great-grandchildren.
On June 29, 1974, in South New Berlin, John married Barbara Smith Baldwin. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Barbara of Norwich; his sons: John Baldwin and wife Phyllis of Norwich, Brent Baldwin, and Dennis Baldwin; and by his step-children, William Kuhn and companion Debbie Robinson of Norwich, and Linda Johnson and husband Rick of Bradenton, Fla.. John is also survived by his grandchildren: Tammy McDonald of Rhode Island, Veronica Warren and husband Joe of South New Berlin, Barbara Myler and husband Ryan of Virginia, Jason Kuhn and wife Heather of South New Berlin, Melissa Demmon and husband Aaron of Mt. Upton; many great grandchildren; his sister, Mary Howard and husband Tom of Herndon, Va.; and his brother, Robert Baldwin and wife Nancy of Sarasota, Fla. John was predeceased by two step-children, Michael and Robert Kuhn.
Services for John will be private and at the convenience of his family. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
