NORWICH – Vera M. Barrows, 72, of Norwich, passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.
The daughter of Wesley and Pauline Blazer Mayne, Vera was born in Guilford in late December of 1937. She grew up in the area and attended Norwich High School, from which she graduated. Her first job, which was prior to her first marriage, was with the Norwich Knitting Mill. She later worked for Champion and its subsidiary, Cool-It Rain Gear, the Norwich Shoe Company, and the Crescent Corset Factory of Oxford. Following her marriage, she and her husband owned and operated a wall paper and painting store in Oxford for a time. Vera’s last job was private duty home care, in and around the Norwich area. Vera loved animals, gardening, and fishing. She enjoyed reading and doing puzzles, and liked to crochet. Her family and friends were the highlights of her life and she treasured time spent with them. For the past few years, she had made her home in the NYS Veterans’ Home of Oxford.
Vera is survived by her children and their spouses: John and Nancy Burt of New Jersey, Terrie (Barrows) and John Miller of New York, Kim (Barrows) and Kevin Menard of New York, Ruth Barrows and companion Sam of Texas, and Carroll (Burt) and Martin of Maine. Also surviving is her brother, Robert Mayne of New Jersey, plus many grand and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Vera was predeceased by her first husband. Guy Burt; her second husband, Robert Barrows; her sons Robert Barrows Jr. and John Stanley Barrows Sr.; and her siblings: Eleanor, Marjorie, Bill, Perry, Howard, and Roy.
Graveside services for Vera will be held at a later date from the Mt. Hope Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Please direct memorial contributions to the American Legion Post #376 of Oxford, Oxford, NY 13843, marked specifically for the holiday food basket fund.
