Alice Call

NORWICH – Alice M. Call, 80, of Norwich, passed away late Wednesday afternoon, March 10, 2010, at her home.
Born in Watertown in September of 1929, Alice was the daughter of Uhlan and Marion Curtis Young. Following her graduation from Copenhagen High School, she attended and graduated from SUNY Potsdam, where she earned her teaching degree. Alice relocated to the Norwich area in 1956 to begin her career as an educator. From her first job in Mt. Upton, through her years in the ward schools of Norwich, and ending with her last teaching post in the 3rd grade in South Otselic schools, from which she retired, Alice was well liked and well respected. She was not one to be inactive following retirement, so Alice involved herself in volunteering for the senior citizens Meals on Wheels Program. As a communicant of St. Paul’s Church, she worked as part of the funeral luncheon group, and was also a member of Norwich’s VFW Christy Rock Post ladies’ auxiliary. From the time her children were born, Alice was a dedicated mom, a wonderful mother and grandmother who was always there for her family. She was an avid reader who still shoveled her own sidewalks, and she loved to take walks through the city.
On April 25, 1958, in Johnson City, Alice married Frank Call Jr., who predeceased her on Feb. 10, 2000. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Pamela and James Murphy of Cincinnati, Ohio, Faith and Gregory Atkins of Clifton Park, Karen and Eugene Selden of DeRuyter, Timothy and JoAnn Call ofWoodbridge, Va., Patrick Call of Norwich; and by her stepchildren, Donalda and Francis. Also surviving are grandchildren Leon, Jennifer, Tommy, and Jacob; her sister, Hazel Watson, and brother, Clyde Young and wife Doris, all of Copenhagen, NY; nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. In addition to her husband Frank, Alice was predeceased by her brother, Walter Young.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Alice will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday from St. Paul’s Church. The Rev. Ralph Bove, pastor of St. Paul’s Church, will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. There will be a recitation of the rosary for family and friends at the funeral home at 4:30 p.m.
