OXFORD – Bernice E. Chase, 94, of Oxford, passed away early Tuesday morning, March 16, 2010, at the New York State Veterans’ Home in Oxford, where she had made her home for the past five years.
Born in May of 1915 in Newark Valley, the daughter of Ford and Clara Densmore Chase, “Chase” graduated from the Oxford Academy and Central School, class of 1935. She served her country in the U.S. Army from September of 1943 until November of 1945, having been trained as a photo lab technician. Being in the service gave her an opportunity to see some very special places.
Among those she enjoyed was the Grand Canyon, where she walked up and down the Bridle Veil path. While in the service, Chase was awarded the American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, WW II Victory Medal, and WAAC Service Ribbon. Employment later took her to Massachusetts General Eye and Ear office in Boston. She returned to Oxford to care for her ailing mother, Clara Parks, and also operated her own photography business from their home.
The love and appreciation of nature gave Chase great pleasure. She enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels. One of her greatest joys was spending time at her friend Carol’s home at Bailey Lake. Her interest in nature was expressed through her wood carvings of birds. People will remember her with “antiquing,” where she sold the many finds, both in Bouckville and Bainbridge, on weekends. Reading books was a wonderful pastime. Her favorite authors were Zane Grey and Louis L’Amour. All the lives she touched will remember her great sense of humor, wit, and strong constitution.
Chase is survived by her special friends: Carol Gloss of Waterville, Harold and Audrey Johnson of Oxford, Suzanne Knapp of Norwich, and Donna Wicks of Waterville, and many other friends and acquaintances.
Chase’s wishes for no formal service will be honored. Interment will be private.
Please consider memorial contributions to the Chenango County SPCA, 6160 County Road 32, Norwich, NY 13815; or to the Chenango County Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 68, Mt. Upton, NY 13809.
