OXFORD – Ann Marie Seymour Genung, 77, passed away Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the New York State Veterans’ Home in Oxford, where she had resided for the past several years.
Born June 3, 1932 in Oxford to Lynn and Agnes Donovan Seymour, Ann was a 1950 graduate of Oxford Academy. She worked for a time as an operator for the C&U telephone company, where she met her future husband, Donald Genung of Norwich. They were married June 23, 1951; he predeceased her in 1998. Ann spent many years raising her family at home before returning to work for Oxford Academy, first as a playground aide and later as a high school secretary. She is perhaps best known for the two decades she spent as an assistant librarian at the Oxford Memorial Library, from which she retired in 2002.
Ann was a life-long parishioner at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Oxford, and was active in the church’s Altar Rosary Society. She was also a frequent volunteer at Oxford’s 60-Plus senior meal site. A voracious reader and avid card player, Ann was a devoted wife and mother, and was especially fond of her dogs. Her unassuming demeanor often masked her sharp wit.
Ann is survived by a daughter, Donna Genung Hitt of Utah; three sons: David Genung and wife Sheri of Arizona, Daniel Genung and wife Temple of Afton, and Jeffrey Genung and partner Justin Matteson of Norwich; seven grandchildren: Dana (Jeff) Hitt Pledger, Brandi (Dan) Hitt Bergevin, Sarah Genung, Audrey Genung, Prahlad Genung, Micah (Reggye) Genung Wiggins and Dillon Genung; four great-grandchildren: Brayden, Jenna, Megan and Katelyn Pledger; a sister-in-law, Mary Genung; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Don, Ann was predeceased by a brother, Robert Seymour; a sister, Jean Seymour Emerson; and a son-in-law, Joe Hitt.
Funeral services for Ann will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Oxford. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home in Norwich. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery of Oxford.
The family suggests contributions in Ann’s memory be made to the Chenango County SPCA, 6160 County Road 32, Norwich NY 13815.
Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich.
