Gary L. Carpenter


Gary L. Carpenter, 86, of 70 North Main Street, Sherburne, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 28, 2022 in Kingston, NY.
Born on October 26, 1935, in Norwich, Gary was the son of Russell Carpenter and Esther Stager. Gary attended Norwich City Schools where he was a member of the football, basketball, and tennis teams. He became an excelled tennis player and earned captain of the High School tennis team. Gary graduated with the class of 1953 before attending Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio.
In 1964, Gary married Sarah Hendrickson, who predeceased him in October 2006, and is survived by their children, Gregg Carpenter, of Pennsburg, PA, and Rusty Carpenter, of Nashville, GA; and 2 grandchildren.
In 1981, Gary married Patricia A. “Pickle” Muller, who predeceased him on June 10, 2014. Gary is survived by their children, Cynthia D’Amour (Jacques), Shirley Skidmore (Joseph), each of Calahan, CO., Paul Prevost (Kim), of Clifton Park, NY; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Phyllis (Richard) Beal and Carol (Claude) Peters. He was predeceased by sons, Steven and Ralph Prevost, his parents; and his step-father, Walter Dickemann.
Gary spent most of his working life as an electrical lineman and was a member of the IBEW Local 1249 Union in Syracuse, NY for over 60 years. In retirement, Gary enjoyed spending time with his family, playing golf at the Mountain Top, going to the Wellness Center in Hamilton (where he earned the title of “Wellness Wonder”), and having a great breakfast at Judy’s Coffee Shop in Sherburne. Gary was very social, and enjoyed meeting and talking to people everywhere he went. He also took great pride in mowing his lawn and working on his home. More recently, Gary resided in the Bida Home in Oxford, New York.
Funeral services for Gary will be held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at the Wilson Funeral Home, where Deacon Timothy McNerney, will officiate. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home, in Norwich, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will immediately follow the service at St. Malachy’s Cemetery in Sherburne.
