Stanley A. Stopera, 86, of Norwich, NY, passed away Saturday, July 2, 2022 at his home.
Stan was born on October 17, 1935 in Sherburne, NY to the late Adam and Josephine (Potter) Stopera. Stan lost his mother at age 12, and was later raised by his step-mom, Harriet Stopera.
Stan was a graduate of the Sherburne High School class of 1954, and attended the Coyne Electric School in Chicago, IL.
On August 12, 1967, Stan married the former Marjory Sawyer.
Shortly after his time at Coyne, he began working for TACO Antennas in Sherburne, and then began his 30-year career at C&U Telephone Company in Norwich and its successors (presently Frontier Communications), retiring in 1995 from GTE Telephone Company (the third owner of the former C&U). At the same time, he was owner and operator of Roberts Radio & Repair Shop with his partner, Charlie Brancato Sr. He also served for 21 years as Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Norwich Telops Federal Credit Union.
Stan enjoyed a good game of pool, watching NASCAR racing, college basketball, financial news, and politics. His interest in reading contributed to his extensive knowledge on a variety of subjects. Having an interest in history, he enjoyed reminiscing stories of his early years as the “Sherburne Quarter People.”
Stan was an independent person of strength and confidence who was highly respected. He never hesitated to give his opinion on any topic.
Stan is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marjory; his step-sister, Helen (Lenny) Faulkner; his sister-in-law, Kathy Kingsley; and a large, loving extended family.
Stan was predeceased by his parents, Adam, Josephine, and Harriet Stopera; and his brothers-in-law, Mike Sawyer, Fred Abbott, and Ron Faulkner.
