GREENE – Fred Poland Jr., 80, passed away after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at home surrounded by his family.
Fred was born on April 16, 1930 in Staten Island, son of the late Fred and Gladys Poland Sr. In 1948, Fred moved to McDonough where he operated a dairy farm for 28 years. While in McDonough he was a volunteer fireman and Town Assessor. After farming, he owned and operated The Brookside Inn in Greene for 20 years. Fred was the life of the party. He loved life, his family, his garden and gambling.
He is survived by his wife of thirty years, Beverly; five children, David (Charity), Jeff and Karen Poland all of McDonough, Debbie and Harry MacAvoy of Saratoga Springs, Kathy (Juan) of Walton, Zack (Bobbie) of Endicott; stepson, Gary Crosby (Leann) of Tennessee; seven grandchildren, Nicholas Poland, Laura and Carolyn MacAvoy, Heather Herren and her husband, Jason, Brian Caffery, Sayge Poland and Ruger Crosby; three great grandchildren, Trinity, Olivia and Evan Herren.
Friends of the family may call at Root Funeral Home, 23 N. Chenango Street, Greene on Saturday from noon until 2 p.m. At Fred’s request, friends are also invited to a celebration of his life at his home Saturday immediately following calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society , 13 Beech Street, Johnson City, NY 13790.
