NORWICH – Shirley Barnes Murtagh, 78, of Charlotte, N.C. passed away May 1, 2010.
A graveside service was held May 5 officiated by Reverend Jesse Bowles. The United States Air Force Honor Guard concluded the service.
A long time resident of Norwich, she graduated from Norwich High School in 1949. After graduation she entered the Air Force. She was employed by Chenango Memorial Hospital in the Medical Records Department until she relocated to Charlotte in the mid 1980s. She was employed by Carolina’s Medical Center Mercy as a Medical Records Specialist until her retirement.
Shirley is survived by her daughters and their spouses: Sheryl and Randy Smith; Carolyn and Jeff Fleming and her grandchildren, Carolyn’s sons Kyle and Ryan all of Charlotte, N.C. Also surviving are her four brothers: Morris Barnes of Michigan, Harold (Babe) and Doris Barnes of Norwich, Richard and Marilyn Barnes of Cortland, Donald and Ana Mae Barnes of New Hampshire and her sister Margaret Murtagh of Texas.
Shirley is remembered by her daughters as a band chaperone, not afraid to take off on an adventure that lead to trips to New Jersey and Florida, as well as lots of roller coaster rides and beach weekends. She will be missed.
