SMYRNA – Deborah Ann DuBois, 44, of Flat Iron Rd., passed away Monday, May 31, 2010 at her home following a courageous battle against a brain tumor.
She was born June 29, 1965 in Kahnawake, Quebec (Mohawk Territory), a daughter of the late Kenneth and Patricia Parent Rice. She was very proud of her heritage as a Mohawk and a member of the Wolf Clan. Her Mohawk name was Ken‚nikatsi‚tenhsera:a (Little Bird). On Sept. 24, 1988, Deb married Barton H. DuBois, Jr. in Port Jervis. Deb was a loving wife and a devoted mother to her son, Charles. For the past nine years, Deb had worked as a Campus Security Officer at Colgate University in Hamilton. Previously, she had worked for Superior Ambulance Service as an Emergency Medical Technician; for Preferred Mutual Insurance and for Victory Markets.
Deb loved life and lived it to the fullest. She enjoyed playing golf and was an avid NASCAR and Jeff Gordon fan. She was a dedicated deer hunter, and served as a Hunter Safety Instructor and a Bow Hunter Safety Instructor for the NYSDEC. She was also a League Commissioner for the Fantasy Football league. She was a former Assistant Cub Master and a Committee Chairman for the Cub Scout Pack #66 of Sherburne.
Deb was an inexhaustible member of the Smyrna Fire Department. She was an EMT and a former Captain of the Smyrna Emergency Squad and was named Smyrna Squad Member of the Year in 1997. She was the former President of the Smyrna Fire Department Auxiliary and the current President of the Chenango County Auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband Barton; her son, Charles A. DuBois of Smyrna; and her sister, Nancy Rice of Canada. She was predeceased by her twin brother, Daniel Rice.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne, followed by burial in the West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
The Smyrna Fire Dept. and Auxiliary, and the Chenango County Auxiliary will be calling as a group at 7 p.m. Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Sherburne Cub Scouts Pack #66, or the Smyrna Emergency Squad.
