NORWICH – Vaughn Katherine Cumings, 79, of Thompson Road, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.
Born Nov. 19, 1930 in Norwich, Vaughn was the daughter of Clarence and Hazel (Joy) Williams. She married the love of her life, Dr. Lawrence Cumings, on July 18, 1975 and was predeceased by him in June of 2001.
Vaughn graduated with honors from Norwich High School in 1947 and started working in the billing department at Norwich Mills in July of 1947. After advancing to assistant to Executive Vice President Joseph Schoendorf in 1955, as Style Coordinator, she was elected a Vice President in 1965. When Champion Products of Rochester bought Norwich Mills, Vaughn was also elected Assistant Secretary of Champion. She remained with Champion until 1979 when she chose not to transfer to their Rochester office. Upon leaving Champion, she did billing for her husband’s podiatry office until they retired together in October of 1984.
Vaughn was a past member of the Norwich Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Zonta Club, a member of the Chenango County Council of the Arts and a member and volunteer of the Chenango County Historical Society and The Northeast Classic Car Museum. She was also a member of the Jewish Center of Norwich. She enjoyed gardening and bird watching in her spare time.
Vaughn is survived by several cousins; two step-daughters, Hildy Magin of Guilderland, NY and Kathryn (Peter) Michelman of Fairfax, VA; a grandson, Scott Michelman of Santa Cruz, CA and also good friends Byron Harrington, Drs. Pat Warski and Jeff Todd and family as well as her beloved dog, Crystie.
Funeral services for Vaughn will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Jewish Center of Norwich. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery next to her husband, Larry. There will be no calling hours.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Chenango Co. Historical Society, the Chenango Co. SPCA or to the Norwich Fire Department Emergency Squad.
