John A. Graves of North Norwich, NY, 100 years old, passed away at his home on Monday, October 21, 2024.
He and his wife Esther McKie Graves had two children, Thomas who survives and Shirley Jean who passed away. John and Ester celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.
John served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Navy.
When he came home to North Norwich, he built Graves Wheel and Brake Service and repaired vehicles from all over Chenango County until his retirement.
In The 1950s John was one of the founding fathers of the North Norwich Fire Department and he and other members built the fire House. He served as chief for 17 years and then Deputy Fire Coordinator for Chenango County.
In his retirement he was a dedicated Chenango County Historical Society volunteer and also delivered meals to handicapped members of his community. He was a member of the North Norwich Methodist Church.
On October 20th of 2024 John was given a “Surprise 100th Birthday Party” at the North Norwich Fire House. Chief Matt Beckwith gave him a citation and plaque from Albany and a plaque for his services. He received “Best Wishes“ from more than 100 firemen and friends and enjoyed every moment of the party.
A Funeral service for John will be at the North Norwich United Methodist Church Thursday, October 31, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Calling hours will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. before the funeral at the church.
