Fred J. Mathers


Fred J. Mathers, 84, of North Norwich, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2025.
Fred was born in Norwich to the late Melvin and Elizabeth (Goldby) Mathers. He attended school in Norwich where he excelled at playing many sports and developed a lifetime love for his favorite teams, the NY Mets and Syracuse Orangemen.
Fred also served his country proudly in the US Marine Corps from 1958-1962. He made his living in Washington D.C as a union bartender, serving many dignitaries and celebrities. He was proud of his work and loved to show people the picture of him with George H.W. Bush. He then went on to become a superintendent for an apartment complex in Washington D.C. until his retirement.
After retirement, Fred returned to North Norwich to enjoy quieter days. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 189 in Norwich as well as The Elks Club. Fred enjoyed spending time with his dogs, golf, bowling and cheering on his favorite teams.
Fred leaves behind his daughters, Beth and Delbert Tso, and Tricia and Michael Chaput; his grandsons, Ethan Tso, Andrew Tso, and Joshua Ficke; his sisters, June Berry, and Judy Montgomery; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Fred was predeceased by his wife Hilda; his brother, William Mathers; and his sisters, Shirley Jennings, Lillian Edick, and Linda Sutton.
A graveside service with military honors for Fred will be announced in the spring of 2025.
Arrangements have been entrusted to R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.
