NEW MILFORD, Conn. – Doris J. Fernandes, 79, of New Milford, Conn., passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at Charlotte Hungerford  Hospital, Torrington, Conn. She was the wife of the late Joseph G. Fernandes.
Mrs. Fernandes was born in Teaneck, N.J., June 9, 1931, daughter of the late Henry and Irene M. Williamson Meyer.
She received a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Columbia Presbyterian School of Nursing. She was employed as a public health nurse for Chenango County for 13 years, from 1969 to 1982, and a nurse at Connecticut Community Care, Waterbury, Conn. from 1982 until retirement in 1995.
She was a member of the Altar Guild of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington, Conn.
Mrs. Fernandes is survived by a son, Gary Fernandes and his wife Regina of St. Charles, Ill.;  two daughters, Carlyn  Schumacher and her husband Michael of Naugatuck, Conn. and Gail Whaley and her husband Dennis of Livingston Manor;  and a grandson, Andrew Fernandes. She was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Brooks.
Funeral services took place at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Episcopal Church,  78 Green Hill Road, Washington, Conn. Burial followed at Morningside Cemetery, Gaylordsville, Conn.
Friends called on Sunday at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford, Conn.
