Andrew Good Jr.


SHERBURNE – Andrew Jackson Good Jr., 75, died on July 27, 2010. Born on Feb. 18, 1935 in Roanoke he was the son of the late Andrew and Helen Good. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Diana Deering Good, and a grandson, William Levi Reiner.
He was a retired clergyman, having received a Bachelor’s degree from Emory and Henry College, Master’s degrees from Boston University and Syracuse University, and a Doctorate in Theology from Lancaster Theological Seminary. He served churches in Roanoke, Boston, Alexandria, Sherburne and Champaign, Ill. While in Champaign he served as President of the Illinois United Church of Christ Conference. He also worked for many years as a pastoral counselor, as well as a professor for the State University of New York. After graduation from college he traveled to Pakistan as an exchange student. He enjoyed hosting exchange students in his own home in later years. He was active in many community activities, including several music and literary groups, as well as library boards, ministerial groups, and social justice groups. He was the author of four non-fiction books as well as numerous magazine and journal publications. In 1990 he won an award from Harper & Row publishers for Best Sermon of the Year. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
Jack is survived by a daughter, Kristen Good Reiner, her husband, George, and a grandson, John Andrew Reiner (all of Middletown, New Jersey); a brother, Melvin Lee Good and his wife Doris (of Raleigh, North Carolina); as well as a niece and nephew and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 2015 Grandin Road SW in Roanoke on Saturday, Aug. 7 at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to the Roanoke Friends Meeting, P.O. Box 8023, Roanoke, VA 24014.
