NORWICH – Gerard J. Reiss, Sr., 82, of Norwich, passed away Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010 in the Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born in December of 1927 in Glendale, he was the son of Charles and Josephine Stoeckert Reiss.
Gerry spent most of his early years in Glendale where he attended the Jamacia Schools. He had also spent time in Little Neck and Great Neck. In February of 1946, he entered the United States Army/Air Force serving his country until his honorable discharge in August of 1947. Much of his working career was with the New York City Fire Dept., where he worked for 20 years retiring as a Captain. In 1975 he moved his family to the Norwich-Oxford area where he owned and operated a dairy farm. In 1988, they moved to Lyon Brook Road, where they continued to make their home.
On June 4, 1955 he married Marion Stylski Reiss, who passed away Aug. 1, 2009.
Gerry is survived by his children: Gerard Jr. and Leslie Reiss of Oxford, Anthony E. and Karen Reiss of Ohio, Matthew and Tammy Reiss of Unadilla, Peggy and Harry Swartwood of Norwich, Mary Beth and Christopher Roberts of California, and Paul “The Favorite” Reiss of North Carolina and by his brother Jerome Reiss of California. Also surviving are his grandchildren Kellie Reiss, Michael Reiss and his wife Cary, Jessica Reiss, Kyle Reiss, Anthony Reiss II, Danielle Reiss, Janice Swartwood. Lisa Swartwood, Hannah Roberts, Emma Roberts, Stephanie Reiss and Tyler Reiss. Several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
Besides his wife Marion, Gerard was predeceased by a sister Rosemary Reiss and his brothers Edward, Edward, Francis, Charles and Joe.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Gerard will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. from St. Paul’s Catholic Church. Interment with full military rites will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery of Oxford.
There will be no calling hours.
