NEW BERLIN – Mary Caroline Hoxie, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010. She was surrounded by her loving family at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
Mary was born on Jan. 2, 1921 in Belleville, Pa., the daughter of the late Bruce and Laura Harshbarger. She was predeceased by her husband “Johnnie” and her son Michael.
Her loving family includes sons, Harold (Lori) of Painted Post, Dennison (Linda) of New Berlin, John (Linda) of Loudonville and daughter Jean of Virginia Beach, Va.; and a daughter-in-law, Diane Hoxie of New Berlin. Mary has 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mary spent her childhood in Belleville, Pa. She moved to New Berlin with her parents as a young adult. She worked at the Chase Memorial Hospital as a Nurses Aid until 1967, when she became a Family Care Provider for the State of New York. Mary retired at the age of 87 after 40 years of devoted service.
Mary was known by many as “Ma Hox.” On any given day, she could be found whistling away in her kitchen while she prepared the latest meal. Her home and her kitchen were always open to family and friends, and no one ever walked away hungry. She was a generous woman who saw the good in everyone and always put others needs in front of her own. Mary touched the lives of all who met her and she will be missed dearly.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Dakin Funeral Home LP in New Berlin. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Berean Baptist Church, New Berlin, of which she was a long-standing member.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the dialysis unit of Bassett Hospital, the Berean Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
