NORWICH – David Daley Phelps, 78, of Norwich, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010 at Chenango Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 20, 1931 in Norwich, Dave was the son of Florence and Lewis Phelps. He attended St. Paul’s School and graduated from Norwich High School in 1949. Following graduation, he worked in the family printing business, Chenango Union Printing, Inc. He then entered the army in January of 1951 at Fort Dix, N.J. After basic training and Leadership School, he was assigned to the Far East Command and served with the 27th Wolfhound Regiment, 25th Division in Korea for 11 months. He completed his service and was discharged at Fort Belvoir, Va.
In August of 1952, Dave married Mary Swartout in Norwich. He is survived by six children: Susan Phelps of Norwich, Christopher Phelps and his wife, Susie, of Charlotte, NC, Annette Brown and her husband, Timothy of Flagstaff, Ariz., Joseph Phelps and his wife, Deborah, of Norwich, Andrew Phelps and his wife, Pamela, of Norwich and James Phelps and his wife, Tracy, of Cornelius, N.C. He also has six grandchildren.
In August of 1980, Dave married Beverly Slater Webb who died in September 2004. They had three step-children, Patricia Webb of Utica, Joann Post and Diane Mohr of Norwich.
Dave retired in 1993 after turning the business over to his son, Andrew and worked part time as a consultant there.
David was a volunteer fireman, belonging to the George Rider Hook & Ladder Co. for 15 years. He was also a life member of the Norwich Elks Lodge 1222, VFW Post 2782 and the American Legion Post 189. In his early years, he was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus and Boy Scout Troop 67. He was a life-long devoted member of St. Paul’s Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Dave will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Paul’s Church. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at the Wilson Funeral Home on Monday from 5-7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of David may be made to St. Paul’s Church, 30 Pleasant Street, Norwich, NY 13815.
