Allan  Dean


NORWICH – Allan A. Dean, 79, of Norwich passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010.
Allan was born on Nov. 30, 1930 in Buffalo, New York. On Aug. 13, 1955 in Arcade, New York, he married Phyllis Hoffman, who survives. Allan served as a General Instructor in the United States Air Force from 1952 through 1956 and in the Air Force Reserves from 1956 through 1960. He is a veteran of the Korean War. He remained active in the Veteran's Association and served as President of the Sampson Air Force Base Veteran's Association. Allan graduated from SUNY Fredonia and later received his Master's Degree from SUNY Buffalo. He took advanced courses at Syracuse University and at SUNY Oneonta and Cortland. He was an educator for many years, serving as Vice-Principal of Gibson School. He later went on to become the CEO for Opportunities for Chenango and was instrumental in establishing the Town and Country Transit Service. He was a business owner in both Greene and New Berlin. Allan was active in many service organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Retired Teacher's Association, Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Past president of Kiwanis, a forty-year member of the Masonic Lodge 149 F & A M. Allan enjoyed antiques of any kind, especially tractors. He played in the Music Makers Band for fourteen years and operated his own disc jockey service both here and at their winter residence, Zephyrhills, Fla.
In addition to his wife, Phyllis, of Norwich, Allan is survived by one son, Aaron A. Dean and his wife, Diane together with five grandchildren, Thomas, Mary Frances, Abigail, Parker and Lauren. He is also survived by one brother, Rev. Vernon Dean (Marjorie), and brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald (Margery) Hoffman, Helen Forrest, Barbara (Richard) Pack, Bernard (Barbara) Hoffman and Bruce (Rose) Hoffman and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Allan will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilson Funeral Home. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Freedom, New York.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Norwich Emergency Squad or a charity of your choice.
