George Williams


SHERBURNE – George D. Williams, 69, of Sherburne and formerly of Oxford, passed away Sunday afternoon, Oct. 17, 2010, at the Wilson Regional Medical Center in Johnson City.
George was born in October of 1941 in Oxford the son of Lee Augustus and Edna Elizabeth Miles Williams. He grew up in Oxford where he attended the local schools. A veteran of the United States Army, George served his country from February 1967 until his honorable discharge in February 1973. George has made his home in Sherburne for many years and was employed by the Sheffield Chemical Co. for 30 years, retirng in 1997.
George enjoyed bowling and over the years had bowled for several area leagues. He also enjoyed an occasional games of shuffleboard and had been a member of the Central Valley Shuffleboard League. He was also a former member of the Earlville American Legion Post.
On March 16, 1991 in Sherburne, he married Laurie Kelly Williams, who survives.
Besides his wife Laurie of Sherburne, George is survived by his daughters Katerena and Miranda Williams both of Sherburne, his sisters Cornelia Cashman of Virginia, Marilyn (Dorr) Moore of Oxford, Myrna Dumond also of Oxford, Muriel (Fred) Matteson of Florida, Thelma (David) Robinson also of Florida, Viola Reko of Missouri and Catherine (Paul) Foley of Utica, his brothers Donald Williams of Oxford and David (Bonny) Williams of Missouri. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
George was predeceased by his daughter Viola Williams, his brothers Lee and Wayne Willaims and his sisters Beverly Black, Shirley Adams and Ruth Diefenbacher.
A funeral service for George will be held at noon on Thursday, Oct. 21, from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Al Lang, pastor of the United Church of Oxford, will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in the Riverview Cemetey of Oxford.
Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home of Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at noon.
