Dorothy Vanwagner Winter


 SHERBURNE – Dorothy VanWagner Winter, 95 years, formerly of Sherburne, passed away Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Born on Aug. 27, 1915 in West Winfield, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Elva Smith VanWagner. She attended grade school at Sherburne County School District #9 and graduated from Sherburne High School in 1932. She then went on to attend and graduate from Excelsior School of Business in Utica. At St. Paul’s Church in Norwich on April 22, 1935, she became the bride of Joseph Winter. They lived in the Norwich area for many years and were members of St. Paul’s Church. She was employed by the Norwich Knitting Mills/Champion Products, where she worked in the payroll department, retiring in 1977 after 23 years of service. Dorothy and Joe moved from Norwich to Smyrna where they lived for 14 years. In 1991, they moved to Sherburne. While living in Smyrna and Sherburne, she was a member of St. Malachy’s Church. Following the death of her beloved Joseph in 1999, she moved to Albuquerque, N.M.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, Rev. Harry Winter, OMI (Oblates of Mary Immaculate) of St. Paul, Minn., and Michael Winter of Albuquerque, N.M. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Susan Cunningham and Kristin Mahalaris of Jacksonville, Fla.; Gabrielle Goglia of Glendale, Calif.; Jessie Vehar of Albuquerque, N.M; James Salyards, Monica Shanley and Consuelo Kelley, all of Denver, Colo.; ten great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald VanWagner of New Berlin. She was predeceased by her daughter, Joanne in 1988, her son, Joseph in 2010, her sister, Gertrude Marks and four brothers, Robert, Jay, Roy and Benjamin VanWagner.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday from St. Paul’s Church, 30 Pleasant St., Norwich, followed by burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Norwich.
Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 S. Main St., Sherburne on Friday from 7-9 p.m.
