SHERBURNE – Mary Elizabeth O’Brien Luley, 96, of Sherburne, affectionately known as “Betty,”, passed away Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011 at the Harding Nursing Home, Waterville, where she had been a resident for the past six years.
She was born Oct. 24, 1914 in Sherburne, a daughter of Cornelius and Elizabeth Treacy O’Brien and was a graduate of Sherburne High School in 1933. She continued her education through summer courses at Geneseo, and several years of training courses under the auspices of the Four County Library System in Binghamton. At her retirement in 1989, she had spent 35 years as the librarian at the Sherburne Public Library.
On July 24, 1965, Mary Elizabeth married Albert Luley in St. Malachy’s Church, Sherburne. He predeceased her on Feb. 6, 1967.
Betty was a communicant and life long member of St. Malachy’s Church in Sherburne, and a member of the Altar & Rosary Society. She was a former member of the Chenango Water Exercise Group in Hamilton.
Surviving are several cousins. She was predeceased by a half-brother, James O’Brien in 1993.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday from St. Malachy’s Church, with burial in St. Malachy’s Cemetery in the spring.
There will be no calling hours.
