NORWICH – Mamie G. Foster, 85, long-time Norwich resident, passed away Sunday evening, Feb. 13, 2011, in the Residential Health Care Facility at Chenango Memorial Hospital, where she had made her home in recent years.
The daughter of Clarence and Della Story Guinn, Mamie was born in Johnson City, Tenn., late in December of 1925. Following her early years in Tennessee, Mamie moved to the Norwich area in 1943 and graduated from Norwich High School in 1945. Mamie and her husband for 28 years, Raymond L. Foster, were married on May 22, 1949. The Fosters purchased their home on Chenango Avenue in 1952, and Mamie continued to live there until 2008 when her health made it necessary for her to relocate to the RHCF. Mamie was a very caring lady who would always put others before herself. She spent many years as a cashier with the Norwich A&P Supermarket, until they closed their doors, then worked for another 10 years in the dietary department of the Valley View Manor Nursing Home. Mamie was well known for her baking, especially cookies and cakes which she loved to decorate for most of the holidays.
Mamie is survived by her children: Kandice Richer and husband Alan of Norwich, Lawrence Foster of Norwich, and William “Will” Foster and wife Jo of Otego. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Aaron and Robin Foster. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond, on Dec. 28, 1978.
Funeral services for Mamie will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. David J. Spiegel Sr., pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the spring in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home on Thursday from 2-7 p.m., with Mamie’s family in attendance from 5-7 p.m.
