OXFORD – Robert Bruce Hemstrought, 88, long-time Oxford resident, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, in the Chase Memorial Nursing Home of New Berlin.
Bruce was the son of William and Luzetta Wood Hemstrought. Born in March of 1922 in Syracuse, he grew up in Oxford and had attended the local schools. During World War II, Bruce served his country in the U.S. Army in the Philippines. In April of 1956, he married Phyllis Deuel, and they made their home in Oxford while Bruce worked as co-owner of Martin Supply, a plumbing and heating service. In 1982, Bruce and Phyllis decided to relocate to Florida, and they lived there until Phyllis’s passing on July 9, 2009, at which time Bruce decided to return to Chenango County. He was a member of the Oxford American Legion for many years.
Bruce is survived by his children: Karen Hemstrought of Kittery, ME, Robert Hemstrought and fiancee Susan Green of Oxford, and Scott Hemstrought and wife Christine Cosen of Dryden; two brothers Albert Hemstrought of South Carolina and Bill Hemstrought and wife Joyce of Norwich; 6 grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Wilson Hemstrought, Warren Hemstrought and George Hemstrought.
Graveside services for Bruce will be held in the spring, from the Riverview Cemetery of Oxford. There will be no calling hours.
