NORWICH – Alice M. “Mama Bear” Boydell, 90, of Norwich and formerly of Guilford, passed away Friday, April 1, 2011, in the Residential Health Care Facility of Chenango Memorial Hospital, where she had resided in recent months.
Born in November of 1920 in the Paterson, N.J. area, Alice grew up there and attended Central High School. She furthered her education at Paterson State Teacher’s College, then worked as a proofreader for many years in the northern New Jersey area. In 1966, Alice and her husband, Bill “Papa Bear” Boydell moved to Guilford, where they built their small golf course “Way Back of Sundown.” They ran it for five years, then sold it and retired in 1976.
Alice is survived by her brothers and their wives: Donald and Rose Haenichen of Guilford and Jack and Chris Haenichen of Heber, Ariz.; several nephews; one step-daughter, Dawn George and husband Jimmie of Wayne, N.J.; and several step-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1995.
There will be no formal service nor calling hours. Because Alice and Bill both loved cats and dogs, memorial contributions may be sent to the Chenango County SPCA, 6160 County Road 32, Norwich, NY 13815.
